Cybersecurity: Can India fight back Chinese threats and cyber attacks?
Off late China has been quite active in it’s cyberspace.Chinese state sponsored hackers have been emerging and posing a threat to institutions and companies around the world especially those in United States and Europe. But the question arises:Do the neighbours of China especially those competing with it like India need to be prepared and be ready to fight back this threat?.

Since the border clashes between India and China in May 2020, Chinese hacker groups have been regularly targeting Indian public sector companies and technical establishments through cyber security breaches.Soon after the clash in the Galwan Valley, a Chinese hacker group known as RedEcho attempted to target Indian power sector networks and seaports. The RedEcho group is said to be part of a Chinese military intelligence unit based in Urumqi, northwest China. The hackers attempted to breach the security of regional power load dispatch centres across Central India, which are in charge of running the power grid by balancing electricity supply and demand. The main reasons for carrying out such an activity will be to snoop or conduct espionage activities and use it for future escalation if the two countries have another clash. Recent cyber intrusions have also crippled bank systems and caused a hiccup at the country's premier stock exchange, the National Stock Exchange. In September of last year, evidence emerged of a Chinese government-linked company's attempt to track the digital footprints of thousands of Indian citizens. The government was informed of a malware threat in segments of its power infrastructure in November. Another Chinese government-linked hacking group, according to a cyber-intelligence firm, has now targeted the makers of the two vaccines currently used in India's COVID-19 vaccination programme.
Lt Gen Rajesh Pant, the country's National Cyber Security Coordinator, revealed earlier this month that India is working on a new national strategy to strengthen the country's cyber-security in the face of China's cyber eye. In announcing the plan, he stated that it would coordinate responses across ministries such as Home Affairs, Information Technology, defense, and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre in the event of an attack, as well as establish audit procedures. According to him, the new strategy will establish protocols for prevention and auditing in order to secure the government's digitally connected water, health, and education systems, which are all being treated as critical infrastructure. Supercritical infrastructure will include nuclear, power, and aviation.

Cyber security being an international as well as domestic threat should be curbed collectively with all the countries to protect those countries not so well with technology as well.We must gain a better understanding of the risks: the source and nature of threats, as well as how they may impact financial stability. To better understand the risks, we need more data on threats and the impact of successful attacks.
Collaboration on threat intelligence, incident reporting, and best practices in resilience and response must be improved. Information sharing between the private and public sectors must be improved, for example, by removing barriers to banks reporting problems to financial regulators and law enforcement.Regulatory approaches must become more consistent. Countries now have varying standards, regulations, and terminology. Reduced inconsistency will allow for more communication.
